This programme is for students who want to study towards a career in Hairdressing, Barbering and Nail Technology but who have been unable to meet entry requirements at Level 3 and above.
This programme will prepare school leavers, young people and/or those with no formal qualifications, who are creative and enjoy working with people to gain skills, knowledge and personal qualities to succeed in further tertiary education or employment in the areas of Hairdressing, Barbering and Nail Technology.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age or higher (or 15 with MOE exemption) prior to commencement of the programme; and be a New Zealand resident or citizen.
This programme is not open to international students.
Applicants must not have tertiary qualifications
Students must be able to demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to complete the programme as part of the entry process. These attributes will be assessed through an interview.
Content
Students will learn communication skills, customer service skills and working in a team, and cultural awareness and diversity in the workplace. Students will gain an introduction to a salon environment including consultation techniques, identifying conditions and contradictions, essential problem-solving skills, basic salon duties, including laundry and client care so they can work under supervision within a variety of chosen contexts.
Depending on the chosen context, students will learn hairdressing tasks such as preparing for the day and basic hairdressing skills, relating to shampooing, blow waving and hair ups. Students could alternatively learn elementary barbering cutting techniques; or preparation and setup for manicure and pedicure treatments with a variety of techniques for nail art. All students will learn health and safety for themselves and others; life and self-development skills including time management, managing change, professional presentation, problem solving and self-reflection, personal presentation and hygiene. Students will gain essential computer and academic literacy skills, and learn personal budgeting and financial planning, and researching and planning for future employment and education goals.
