Dance and Drama

Dance & Drama at WGC

WGC offers a number of extra opportunities for students interested in Dance and Drama. We promote and encourage participation, creativity and the courage to give it a go.
Many of our activities are student led and the chance to be involved will be advertised throughout the year. Students are encouraged to keep on top of these notices through their emails, Te Pūriki, and the WGC_perf_arts Instagram account.

Any general enquiries can also be made to the HOD of Drama and Dance Ms Katie Howes katie.howes@wgc.school.nz

Showquest

Showquest is Aotearoa’s biggest Performing Arts competition. Schools can enter a team of 100 students to perform a student-led piece showcasing Art, Drama, Dance, Music, Culture and Technology. No prior performance experience is necessary – participation will only be limited dependent on numbers.

In 2023 WGC won first place in the Wellington Region with To Be Women, a piece designed to celebrate the generations of women united by the ongoing battle for equality. As well as first place overall, WGC were awarded the School Spirit Award, the ZM Soundtrack Award, the Best Choreography Award, and Highly Commended awards in Lighting, Live Music, and Use of the LED Wall.

Sign ups will be advertised early in Term 1 2025.

Junior and Senior Drama

These productions are run by students and are an opportunity to showcase your talents for an external audience.
Students do not need to take the subject to be involved.

Auditions will be advertised in Term 2, 2025

WGC Dance Team

Dance Team is open to students in Years 9-13 who are interested in teaching and learning new dance routines. Any style or level of experience is welcome.

Drama Club

Drama Club is open to Year 9-13 students of any experience level who are interested in expressing themselves through theatre. It is a student-led club where we work on building acting skills and creating a community where everyone is welcome.

In Term 1 there will be an opportunity to participate in the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. This regional and national festival has been running for 30 years and it is a great opportunity to dip your toes in Shakespeare and for students to take total ownership of a performance piece of 5-15mins.

Improv Club

Improv Club meets weekly at lunchtime and is open to everyone interested in improvisation and drama games. For anyone interested in competition there will be the opportunity to participate in our annual exchange with Wellington College.
