Changes to Waikato University’s Entry For 2021

Tēnā koutou katoa,

This has been a very challenging year for students and their teachers. In response, and to better support students with the ability to succeed in university study, the University of Waikato is changing the approach that it adopts for entry requirements.

Discretionary Entrance
The Discretionary Entrance regulations administered by NZQA enables students who have completed Year 12 in a New Zealand secondary school or equivalent, to enter universities without having met all of the University Entrance requirements.

Students applying to the University who have not achieved University Entrance this year should contact the Admissions Team by emailing info@waikato.ac.nz. They can offer advice and support on study options, including Discretionary Entrance, depending on their circumstances.

JumpStart programme
We offer a summer programme, JumpStart, which runs for four weeks from late January into February. JumpStart comprises papers that students can credit towards their degree, together with a programme of activities that enable students to become well-prepared for university study, make friends and get familiar with campus life before A Trimester begins.

Any students who could benefit from the JumpStart programme should be encouraged to register their interest via the form on our webpage.

Certificate of University Preparation
Students who have not met all the requirements for entrance in the year they are applying and who need a bit more time to be academically prepared for university study can also undertake our Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) .

The certificate programme is designed and delivered to ensure that students are well prepared to start their degree programme in B Trimester, beginning in July.

We encourage all students interested in tertiary study to contact us on 0800 WAIKATO (0800 924 5286) or email info@waikato.ac.nz to discuss their future options.
