Applications are now open for Innovative Young Minds 2022.
The IYM program is designed to encourage young women who will be in Year 11 or Year 12 in 2022, to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and high-tech manufacturing – fields we call the STEMM sector. Two engaging and interactive programs are offered – online and residential programs – which showcase the wide range of study, research and career opportunities available in STEMM.
Participants will be exposed to eye-opening and inspiring science and technology content. They will also make lasting friendships with like-minded young women who share a passion for STEMM! The goal of the program is to inspire a new generation of female innovators and industry leaders.
The residential program is a six-day program in the July 2022 school holidays, giving you the opportunity to learn about the many research and career opportunities in STEMM in the most engaging and hands-on way possible.
Every year offers new and exciting activities and speakers. In previous years, activities have included getting up close and personal with an electron scanning microscope at Victoria University, using cutting-edge virtual reality driving safety technology and learned about how to break things for a living and get paid for it, visiting the incredible Invertebrate Collection at NIWA, exploring the chemistry behind new ‘smart’ paint that can switch on lights, and help test used plastic bottles being turned into brand new food containers, and visiting Parliament for a networking reception with some of New Zealand’s leading scientists, innovators and politicians.
An entirely online program is also offered and will take place in the April 2022 school holidays over five half-day weekday sessions. This will be an engaging and interactive opportunity to see some lab tours, hear inspiring and interactive talks with women researchers and innovators, and hands-on sessions using digital technology.
