Subject line: Parenting Evening: Dr Judith Locke – Developing Resilient Teenagers: Wed September 4th, 7-8.30pm – Wellington College AGC
Tēnā koutou katoa to all our parents and caregivers,
We’ve been advertising this event for some time but in case you missed it…our WGC favourite Dr Judith Locke is here next week!
Why are many parents putting in more and more effort, and yet seeing worse outcomes for their children?
Anxiety is on the rise amongst our young people. Self-esteem, resilience and well-being for our rangatahi are all in decline.
A recent study has shown that “over half of all New Zealanders aged 15 – 24 experience anxiety and depression”, and, even for children who aren’t represented in these statistics, lack of resilience is a problem that parents and teachers are frequently seeing.
So what is going wrong? How do we help our children and teenagers to develop resilience to face life’s challenges and succeed?
The International Coalition of Girls’ School and our Kāhui Ako are delighted to co-host Dr Judith Locke, clinical psychologist, former teacher, and author of The Bonsai Child and The Bonsai Student.
Judith will discuss the risks of ‘overparenting’ and the importance of disappointment in our children’s and teenagers’ development. In particular she will cover:
-
Setting teenagers up for fulfilling years at school
-
Helping teenagers cope with exams, schoolwork, and friendship problems
-
Strategies parents can use to help teens with difficult emotions and to encourage family harmony
-
Preparing teens for life after school
The talk will be held in the Wellington College Alan Gibbs Centre on Wednesday 4th September, from 7pm to 8.30pm. Tea & coffee will be available from 6pm. Please note this talk is for adults only and it is not suitable for children or teens to attend.
While Rob Cope’s session last term covered the risks of online life for our kids and the important actions we as parents and caring adults need to take, Judith’s talk will be more focused on what kids need in real life. We hope you can join us for this important session which promises to shed light on problems many of our parents and young people are encountering.
Tickets are $5 per whānau to help cover costs. (But there is also an option not to pay if this will create a barrier for your family. Please come anyway!) |
