Science – Year 11

The Science department provides two different courses in Year 11 to meet the compulsory science requirement, both of which offer credits at NCEA Level 1. Students will be placed in the most appropriate course for them based on their mode of learning and teacher’s recommendation from Y10 Science. The two courses are:

(a) Science Internal – Year 11, 11SI

The skills you develop in solving problems and answering questions will support your learning in Science as well as in the range of other subjects you study. You will investigate, develop and further your understanding across three main aspects of Science – Biology, Physics and Chemistry/Earth Science. Science Internal students can continue to Level 2 Science.

Assessment: Level 1 Achievement Standards that are all internally assessed.

Qualification available: NCEA Level 1

Science – Year 12, 12SC

The Level 2 Science course will have a general science focus. You will investigate, develop and further your understanding across three aspects of science – Biology, a current science issue and Earth Science. This course will give students an opportunity to continue their science study at school without having to select one of the more traditional choices (Chemistry, Physics, Biology). Note: You must choose between either 12 Biology or 12 Science, you cannot take both subjects.

Assessment: Achievement Standards that are all internally assessed

Pre-requisites: Nil

Voluntary contribution: $35 for Ecology Field trip, $12.00 Workbook

Specialist equipment: Quad refill, a calculator

Note: You cannot do 12SC & 12BI

Leads to: Year 13 Science

Qualification available: NCEA Level 2

Science – Year 13, 13SC

In this course you will investigate and develop further your understanding across three main areas of science – Astronomy, a current socio-scientific Issue and Biology. This course is designed for students wishing to take Science to complement their studies in other areas. Note: You must choose between either 13 Biology or 13 Science, you cannot take both subjects.

Assessment: Achievement Standards that are mostly internally assessed, with one external Biology assessment. This course provides 14 credits from the Biology matrix.

Pre-requisites: Nil

Voluntary contribution: $40 zoo trip, $26 Workbook

Leads to: Tertiary studies e.g. Nursing

Note: You cannot do 13SC & 13BI.

Qualification available: NCEA Level 3

Biology – Year 12, 12BI

In this course you will investigate and develop your understanding of some areas of Biology such as the relationship of organisms and their environment, the biology of cells, genetics and evolution, aspects of animal structure and function, and applications of biology. You will also further develop your scientific skills and attitudes. Note: You must choose between either 12 Biology or 12 Science, you cannot take both subjects.

Assessment: A mixture of internal and external assessment will be offered in this course

Pre-requisites: 12 credits in Level 1 Science including Science 1.9; special application may be made to the Teacher in Charge of Biology for admission if these criteria are not met.

Voluntary contribution: $25 for course workbook, $35 for Ecology Field trip

Note: You cannot do 12SC & 12BI.

Leads to: Year 13 Biology/Science

Qualification available: NCEA Level 2

Biology – Year 13, 13BI

In this course you will build on your biological knowledge and develop an ability to explain human physiology, animal and plant behaviour, genetics and evolution, and contemporary biological techniques and issues. Note: You must choose between either 13 Biology or 13 Science, you cannot take both subjects.

Assessment: A mixture of internal and external assessment will be offered in this course

Pre-requisites: 14 credits in Level 2 Biology; special application may be made to the Teacher in Charge of Biology for admission if these criteria are not met.

Voluntary contribution: $30 for course workbook, $75 for field trips to Zealandia and Wellington Zoo

Note: You cannot do 13SC & 13BI.

Leads to: Tertiary study

Qualification available: NCEA Level 3

Chemistry – Year 12, 12CH

The Year 12 Chemistry course allows you to focus on the Chemistry branch of Science whilst maintaining links with your other subjects where relevant. You will explore in depth the concepts covered at Year 11 and also several new topics that give an insight into interesting and exciting areas of Chemistry and its relationship to everyday life. There is a practical component to the course that allows you to experience chemical reactions for yourselves and build up a skills base that will be useful in future Science studies.

Assessment: A mixture of internal and external assessment will be offered in this course

Pre-requisites: At least 15 credits in each of Science and Mathematics at Level 1.
From Science this must include one of the following external papers – Acids & Bases (11SC), Chemical Reactions, Carbon Chemistry (both from 11SE). Mathematics credits can come from either the 11MS or 11MSI course. Special application may be made to the Teacher in Charge of Chemistry for admission if these criteria are not met.
