Students will learn to critically analyse health issues and evaluate solutions in relation to the determinants of health and the underlying concepts. Students need to develop links to cultural, political, and economic determinants to direct and indirect effects on well-being. Students will critically analyse their own and others’ attitudes, values, and beliefs about current issues and develop and justify strategies that will promote societal well-being, and for people directly and indirectly affected by health issues in NZ. This course is separate from the Physical Education curriculum designed especially for individuals with an interest in health, medicine, education, sport and exercise or social and community services. During the year we will explore a range of health related contexts to discuss ideas, promote strategies, provide recommendations and consider assumptions on a range of health issues both within New Zealand and around the world. Possible issues could include teenage alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, mental illness, addiction, type 2 diabetes, immunisation, euthanasia, abortion as well as many other options. This course will critically explore these issues relevant to adolescents and prepare you for your potential future in the health sector. This course focuses on developing understanding of risk management, leadership, social responsibility and teamwork. It is an exciting and mostly practical course that provides you with the opportunity to participate in a range of sporting and outdoor contexts. The students will embark on an outdoor physical activity trip where they will plan and evaluate risk factors that may affect their health and wellbeing through the people, environment, and equipment.
